Habitat Restoration Intern

A coalition of five local conservation partners invites a Juniata student to apply for a 400-hour summer internship (start date negotiable, but as early as immediately after final exams in May and to be completed by the end of July) focused on native plants, habitat restoration, conservation farming, and community-based environmental work.

The intern will collaborate with local businesses and volunteers engaged in restorative and conservation efforts, dividing their time among the project sites in Tyrone, the Altoona area, Fort Roberdeaux near Williamsburg, and Huntingdon. Reliable personal transportation is required, as work will take place on site with partners across these locations.

Community partners include Greg Williams (habitat restoration and community environmental initiatives), Amy Frazier-Yoder and Eric Yoder (conservation farming, habitat work, and beekeeping), Sam and Autumn Mohnkern and Jordan Sesame Wild (native plant growing and restoration design), Jody Wallace (environmental education and land restoration), and Eric Oliver (land stewardship and environmental site restoration).

This internship offers hands-on experience in areas to include native plant propagation, invasive species removal, habitat and forest maintenance, conservation landscaping installation, beekeeping, community-facing projects, and land stewardship. The intern will gain exposure to a range of approaches addressing the environmental impacts of extraction in our region, while learning practical conservation skills and developing a deeper understanding of local approaches to solving environmental problems. Candidates should have a strong interest in conservation, a desire to engage in varied outdoor work, and a willingness to learn to operate appropriate tools and some machinery.

The position requires the ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions, walk reasonable distances over uneven terrain (including farms, parks, and restoration sites), and lift up to 50 pounds.
