Teacher: English (Adult Education)
Summary of the Position:
Under direction of the Principal, the High School Teacher: English will instruct in the English subject area (core and elective courses) and provide related services to students. Candidates must have a strong desire to work with students to help them achieve their academic, personal, and professional goals. Position requires standards-based lesson plans and curriculum planning with a team; participation in site, and professional development meetings; developing and implementing lessons; keeping accurate records and grades; and, attendance at some after-school meetings/events.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Instruct students in an independent study format.
- Adhere to policies and expectations for the independent study program.
- Compile, administer, and grade examinations, or assign this work to others
- Evaluate and grade students' class work, assignments, and papers.
- Maintain timely student attendance records, grades, and other required records (such as compliance records).
- Initiate, facilitate, and moderate discussions among students (such as small group and/or whole class).
- Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, and course materials and methods of instruction to accommodate student learning.
- Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
- Keep abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional development and conferences.
- Perform community outreach to gain stakeholder feedback and promote the teacher’s class and school, ensuring that the teacher to student ratio remains at industry standard.
- Advise and assist students.
- Participate in campus and community events.
- Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and research issues.
- Advise students on academic progress.
- Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, departmental matters, and academic issues.
- Act as advisers to student organizations.
- Participate in and attend regular professional development.
- Participate in student recruitment, registration, and placement activities.
- Adapt teaching methods to the needs of learners with diverse cultural backgrounds and varying intellectual abilities and attitudes.
- Develop and use a variety of instructional materials suitable for verbal, visual, and hands-on instruction of all learners.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve effective participation in all activities.
- Identifies students’ needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude and learning problems.
- Perform community outreach to gain stakeholder feedback and promote the teacher’s class and school, ensuring that the teacher-to-student ratio remains at industry standard.
- Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education activities provided the school and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
- Perform additional job duties as it relates to the overall objectives of the position, program, and organization as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree Required.
- Meets the State's Basic Skills Requirement established by the CCTC.
- Worked or volunteered in an education-related field (e.g., tutor, substitute) for the equivalent of three years preferred.
- Possess or qualify for an Single Subject credential with an English authorization and one of the following:
- Full English Learner Authorization (or CLAD Emphasis) - ELA1.
- Single Subject Credential with revised ELA2 - ELAS.
- Multiple Subject Credential with revised ELA2 - ELAM.
- CLAD Certificate - SA12.
- Bilingual Authorization - BA.
- Single Subject Credential in World Language: ELD content area - WLEL, WLEX.
- Any combination of education and/or experience working in Adult Education related activities or an education setting is preferred; previous industry experience is desirable.
- This position requires regular travel between sites. A valid driver’s license, personal automobile, and proof of insurance required.

Physical Requirements:
- Mobility: frequent use of keyboard; frequent sitting at desk and in meetings for long periods of time; occasionally reaching and twisting to reach equipment surrounding desk; occasional walking, standing, bending, stooping, and squatting; occasional pushing, pulling or lifting up to twenty (20) pounds.
- Vision: constant use of overall vision; frequent computer use; occasional color and depth vision.
- Dexterity: frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing and typing; frequent grasping, holding and reaching; frequent operation of office equipment, computers and clerical supplies.
- Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person and on the phone.
- Emotional/Psychological: frequent public and/or coworker contact; ability to remain calm in emergency situations; occasionally works alone.
- Driving: ability to use fine and gross motor coordination for driving.
Typical Working Conditions:
- Work is typically performed in an indoor office environment. Occasional work is performed outside in various types of weather.
- Potential exposure to noise, moisture, dust, vibrations, heat and cold.
- Designated positions may require travel to and from off-site locations throughout the organization.
