POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Position Title: Probation Officer / Deputy Bailiff Department: Adult Probation
Reports To: Chief Probation Officer
Employment Status: Full-Time, Unclassified Position Salary: Based on Qualifications and Experience
This is an unclassified position serving at the pleasure of the Gallia County Common Pleas Court and is not subject to classified civil service protections.
Position Summary
The Gallia County Common Pleas Court is accepting applications for the position of Probation Officer/Deputy Bailiff. This position works under the direction of the Chief Probation Officer and is responsible for supervising adult offenders, conducting investigations, preparing reports and recommendations for the Court, monitoring compliance with court orders, and assisting with courtroom security and operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Community Control and Pretrial Supervision
· Supervise adult offenders placed on community control sanctions, intervention in lieu of conviction, judicial release, diversion, and other forms of court-ordered supervision.
· Supervise defendants placed on pretrial release and monitor compliance with bond conditions.
· Conduct office visits, home visits, employment visits, school visits, curfew checks, and collateral contacts.
· Monitor compliance with treatment requirements, community service, restitution, fines, costs, and other court-ordered conditions.
· Develop, implement, and monitor individualized case plans.
Investigations and Court Reports
· Conduct presentence investigations and prepare written reports for the Court.
· Gather information from law enforcement, victims, treatment providers, employers, and other sources.
· Complete risk and needs assessments utilizing evidence-based practices.
· Prepare violation reports, progress reports, and sentencing recommendations.
· Testify during court proceedings as required.
Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement
· Conduct drug and alcohol testing and maintain chain-of-custody procedures.
· Investigate alleged violations of supervision and court orders.
· Prepare warrants, summonses, and violation notices.
· Coordinate with law enforcement agencies regarding offender investigations and public safety concerns.
Case Management and Record Keeping
· Maintain accurate electronic and paper case records.
· Document all offender contacts and supervision activities.
· Ensure compliance with confidentiality requirements and records retention policies.
Treatment and Community Resource Coordination
· Refer offenders to treatment, counseling, educational, vocational, and community-based programs.
· Coordinate services with treatment providers and criminal justice partners.
· Monitor offender participation and progress in court-ordered programming.
Courtroom Security and Deputy Bailiff Functions
· Ensure the safety and security of judges, staff, litigants, attorneys, prisoners, and the public.
· Maintain order and decorum within court facilities.
· Assist with inmate movement and courtroom operations.
· Coordinate video hearings and remote appearances.
· Respond to emergencies and security incidents.
Professional Responsibilities
· Maintain required certifications and continuing education requirements.
· Attend professional training and remain current on applicable laws and policies.
· Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.
· Perform other duties as assigned by the Judge, Chief Probation Officer, or Court Administration.
Work Environment
This position may involve exposure to potentially dangerous situations, violent or emotionally distressed individuals, hazardous driving conditions, biohazards, needles and drug paraphernalia, and irregular work hours.
Preferred Qualifications
· Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Corrections, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field preferred.
· Experience in probation, corrections, law enforcement, or a related field.
· State Certified Probation Officer certification preferred.
· Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy certification preferred.
· Knowledge of criminal justice procedures and legal terminology.
