Reports to: Supervisor, Genetec & Body Cameras Support Team
Location: East Elmhurst, NY (DOC headquarters in Queens, NY). Onsite work required, full-time initially, with the possibility of remote 2 days a week after six months, subject to operational needs.
Engagement: Contract / Consultant, [duration, e.g., 12 months with possible extension]
Rate: $30 C2C
Schedule: Full-time, with rotating on-call support for critical security systems

About the Role

The NYC Department of Correction seeks an experienced consultant to manage both enterprise Microsoft server infrastructure and the Genetec Security Center platform that supports video surveillance and security operations across the Department’s facilities. You will join the Genetec & Body Cameras Support Team in the IT Division and report to its supervisor. The team keeps the camera, access control, and body-worn camera systems running. These systems support staff safety, incarcerated individuals’ safety, operational transparency, and the integrity of evidentiary video.

This role is a strong fit for someone who is equally comfortable building and hardening a Windows Server environment and troubleshooting a failing archiver or camera stream and who understands why uptime and chain of custody matter in a public safety setting.

Key Responsibilities

Genetec Security Center Administration

  • Administer, configure, and maintain Genetec Security Center, including Omnicast (video management), Synergis (access control), and related roles such as Directory, Archiver, Media Router, and Health Monitor.
  • Add, configure, and troubleshoot IP cameras, encoders, and edge devices across multiple facilities. Manage firmware and compatibility with supported device versions.
  • Monitor system health, video retention, and archiving performance. Identify and resolve recording gaps, storage issues, and failover events.
  • Manage user accounts, partitions, privileges, and role-based access within Security Center, following Department security policies.
  • Plan and carry out Genetec version upgrades, patches, and licensing changes with minimal disruption to operations.
  • Support video retrieval, export, and evidentiary workflows so that footage integrity and chain of custody are preserved for investigations, legal requests, and oversight bodies.

Body-Worn Camera Program Support

  • Provide technical support for the Department’s body-worn camera program, including docking stations, device assignment, upload and offload processes, and integration with backend evidence management systems.
  • Troubleshoot devices, network, and upload problems and work with vendors to resolve them.
  • Help with deployment, inventory tracking, and lifecycle management of body-worn camera hardware.

Microsoft Windows Server Administration

  • Install, configure, maintain, and harden Windows Server 2016/2019/2022 environments that host Genetec and related security applications.
  • Administer Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and service accounts that support security system infrastructure.
  • Manage virtualized environments (VMware vSphere and/or Hyper-V), including server provisioning, snapshots, and resource planning.
  • Support Microsoft SQL Server databases used by Genetec, including backups, maintenance plans, and performance tuning.
  • Apply patches, vulnerability remediation, and antivirus/EDR updates in line with Department and NYC Cyber Command security standards.
  • Manage server storage, including SAN/NAS capacity planning for high-volume video retention.
  • Keep backup, disaster recovery, and high-availability configurations in place for mission-critical systems.

Operations, Documentation & Collaboration

  • Respond to and resolve incidents and service tickets within defined SLAs, and escalate when appropriate.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule for after-hours outages affecting security systems.
  • Create and maintain system documentation, network and architecture diagrams, standard operating procedures, and runbooks.
  • Work with network engineering, cybersecurity, facility operations, investigations, and outside vendors and integrators.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to end users and junior staff as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • 1+ years of hands-on Windows Server administration in an enterprise environment.
  • 1+ years of hands-on administration of Genetec Security Center (Omnicast and/or Synergis) in a multi-site deployment.
  • Strong working knowledge of Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and Windows security hardening.
  • Experience with VMware vSphere and/or Hyper-V virtualization.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server administration as it relates to application support.
  • Solid understanding of TCP/IP networking, VLANs, multicast/unicast video streaming, and PoE as they apply to IP camera systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting IP cameras, storage, and video retention problems.
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills, including the ability to explain technical issues to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background check and obtain clearance to work inside NYC Department of Correction facilities.
  • Willingness to work onsite at correctional facilities, including Rikers Island, and to take part in on-call rotation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Genetec certifications (e.g., Security Center Technical Certification, Omnicast or Synergis technical certifications).
  • Microsoft certifications (e.g., Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate, Azure Administrator).
  • CompTIA Security+, Network+, or equivalent.
  • Experience supporting body-worn camera programs and digital evidence management platforms.
  • Experience in law enforcement, corrections, public safety, or government IT environments.
  • Familiarity with CJIS Security Policy and handling sensitive or evidentiary data.
  • Experience with PowerShell scripting for automation and reporting.
  • Experience with access control hardware (card readers, controllers, door hardware integration).
  • Experience with ITSM ticketing tools (e.g., ServiceNow, Cherwell).

What Success Looks Like

In your first 90 days, you will understand the Department’s Genetec architecture and server footprint, take ownership of day-to-day health monitoring, and close out priority incidents and remediation items. Over the engagement, you will improve system reliability, video retention compliance, and documentation, and you will help the team move toward a more resilient, well-governed security technology environment.

Why This Role Matters

This is a chance to apply your technical skills in one of the most consequential public safety settings in the country. The systems you support directly affect the safety, accountability, and transparency of operations across the City’s jails.

How to Apply

Submit your resume. In your resume or cover note, please highlight your Genetec deployment experience (system size, number of cameras/sites, versions supported) and your Windows Server environment experience.
