Intern - Undergraduate, or Intern Graduate or Intern Post-Graduate - (Systems Planning – Water/Reclaimed Water)
About Department & Key Responsibilities
Austin Water is seeking a Civil or Environmental Engineering Student, or student with similar training, to join our Systems Planning Division. This team plans new utility infrastructure, uses hydraulic models for analysis of water, wastewater, reclaimed water, and water supply systems, and reviews infrastructure plans relating to growth in Austin. The purpose of this position is to perform duties to support Systems Planning’s Water and Reclaimed Water team.
Tasks may include:
1. Performing site visits to water and reclaimed water facilities to verify locations, elevations, and similar specifications of infrastructure. Includes identifying major appurtenances, interpreting record drawings and schematics, measuring elevations of sensors, correlating sensors to SCADA tags, and thoroughly documenting findings.
2. Collecting data from hydrants within the water distribution system by taking pressure readings and performing fire flow tests. Includes utilizing GIS to locate hydrants, operating hydrants, and reading pressure gauges.
3. Updating GIS databases based on as-built drawings, planning documents, and similar data sources.
4. Creating maps and performing GIS analyses related to water and reclaimed water system planning.
5. Assisting in hydraulic model building and calibration.
Schedule:
Monday -Friday 8:00-5:00 *Hours may vary depending upon business needs.
This summer internship is anticipated to start in late June and requires candidates to work a hybrid schedule, including reporting to our downtown Austin office for in-person days and traveling to additional sites across Austin.

Intern – Undergraduate:
- Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
- Enrolled in an accredited college or university undergraduate degree program, with some advanced coursework related to the internship program.
Intern -Graduate:
- Enrolled in an accredited college or university graduate degree program, with some advanced coursework related to the internship program.
Intern – Postgraduate:
- Enrolled in an accredited college or university post-graduate degree program, with some advanced coursework related to the internship program.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a university level or graduate school Civil / Environmental Engineering or related field with coursework related to hydraulics or fluid mechanics.
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Ability to work in a variety of environments, including outdoors, within active construction zones, and in the presence of heavy machinery with adherence to safety standards.
• Ability to open and close hydrants (push/pull up to 50 lbs).
• Experience interpreting engineering record drawings.
• Experience with GIS/geospatial analysis.
• Experience working with large datasets and Microsoft Excel.
Par Range
The starting hourly rate for this internship is $21.63, with compensation based on level of education.
